Customer Service - A Dying Art?

I just love great customer service. There is nothing like it on earth. I like feeling special, like I am the only customer a company has. Unfortunately in this day and age, customer service is lacking, however my faith has been restored (ok…somewhat).

This evening I called Go Daddy about a domain name that I have been pining after since 2003. On June 9th of this year the domain was not renewed. During the months of June, July and August I diligently checked the Go Daddy site once a week to see the status…no renewal, but the domain did go into the redemption period. When mid-September hit, I was like a fly on honey checking the status daily. Today something magical happened. The domain name was “pending delete” and believe me, I am doing the happy dance (I’m surprised you can’t see me :) ).

When the customer service representative got on the phone Chris treated me like royalty. He shared my joy, my pain and my excitement when I found out that the domain should be up for sale in just 5 days! To add to my joy, the current owner of the domain would have to pay $80 to get it out of the redemption/pending delete period.

My point isn’t about my excitement about the domain, it was the fact that Chris was the epitome of FABULOUS and OUTSTANDING customer service. He didn’t rush to get off the phone with me, in fact it was I who cut him off (nicely) because I had another call. Chris acted like I was the only person that mattered to him at that specific moment in time. When he didn’t know the answer to a question I asked, he found out, joyfully and didn’t complain. Chris didn’t act like I was hindering his day, wasting his time with my call, he bent over backwards to make sure that I was happy before we got off the call.

Great customer service is a dying art, probably because most reps are cubicle bound, grossly underpaid and unappreciated. Coaches…get into these companies and coach the higher ups and make them realize that their customer service department is the backbone of their respective companies. Without superb customer service their company does not have a leg to stand on.

So what domain is it? I am not that crazy to tell now…

Until next time,
Becki
