Creating a Viral Message Through Your
Newsletter or Ezine
By: Rebecca Jaspin-Noles

Anyone can create a newsletter or ezine, but is the content actually read and utilized by your target market? The creation of relevant content, which can be implemented immediately, is the key to a successful publication. Once you nail down your content, you can move onto the next phase of development…Viral Marketing. Viral Marketing is defined by MarketingTerms.com as the “marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message”.

You want your marketing message in your newsletter or ezine to be contagious, to be the buzz. Therefore, you need to provide relevant, timely information to your subscribers. If your target market is medical professionals, specifically those dealing with allergic disease, perhaps include studies or research geared towards asthma or air quality. If the studies are relevant and are from a reputable source, your newsletter or ezine is likely to be passed around to other colleagues.

Another key way for your publication to be passed from person to person is through offering an interactive feature such as a personality test, poll or quiz. How many times have you received a message like this in your inbox? How many times have you taken the test, quiz or poll and then in turn, passed it along to someone else? If you really thought about it, it happens more than you might think. If the content is relevant to you, you search through your address book in search of like-minded individuals and you pass the message along. Ah, the essence of Viral Marketing.

Steps to a successful campaign:

  1. The message must be valuable to your target market – if your campaign doesn’t offer value, then the campaign simply will not work.

  2. The message should be easy to forward – forwarding is one of the main purposes for creating a newsletter or ezine. If it’s not easy to send to others, recipients simply won’t forward it.

  3. Your results should be easy to track – keep track of the campaign through website statistics or set up a referral system on your website. When you set up a referral system, make sure that you are copied whenever your message is forwarded. While your stats can be difficult to track, do the best you can.

Simply put, Viral Marketing should be integral of your marketing plan. Everyone is aware that the best form of advertising is word of mouth. Can you think of a simpler way than making it easy for others to send your relevant, timely message to the masses?
